difference between MS170 and 017.

The 170 is $179, and their still is stock out there. They sell very well in my area. Im planning on buying another before they are all gone. The only thing I've heard major failure wise is the carb. A brand new one from Stihl is $30. The MS171 is 20 to 30 dollars higher.

According to the service manual for the 029/039/290/310/390, the air gap specs for the module are 0.15in, or 0.3mm. Take another look at the service manual gap setting, it says. It should be 0.15 - 0.3 mm. (0.006 - 0.012").

common chain for stihl 193T and 201T

The 14 inch 0.050, 3/8 Picco/low profile bar from Stihl that is a small mount and will fit both saws is PN: 3005 000 7409. The loops to get with those size bars are 50 drive links in length. Stihl sells PM3 and RM/RM3 Picco chain in that size and type, PM3 is semi-chisel safety, and RM is full chisel non-safety.

What size file to use for a chainsaw chain?

Hard to know for sure what you've got there without more info or a pic. But an 034 should have 3/8" chain. So as long as it's not square ground (not common) you'd need a 7/32" round file. And as the cutter shortens in length, 13/64 and finally 3/16. The only way to keep track of this is in 64th.

MS170 bar and chain match up

Stihl MS180 bar options

Oregon and Stihl (and others) offer .043 and .050 options that can work. I'd be inclined to stick with .043 for that saw; the 180 and 170 I have run do not seem to have any overabundance of grunt. You could get hold of .050 bar and run "regular" 3/8" low profile chain, but you'll probably pay a penalty in cutting speed.

Stihl Chains & File Sizes

yeah the guide I'm using is an Oregon model for a 3/16 file, and on my 14" MS 170 it does fine. But on the 20" the file doesn't catch all of the tooth. It doesn't go deep enough to put the right edge on the side cutter, just files the top plate and the upper half of the side cutter.

Hey mate, the 170 is a great saw for the money. I run mine with a 3/8LP full chisel chain (14 inch) in 043. I also highly recommend a set of dogs for it (not for help felling or to bury the bar, but to keep wood off the saw and help it run cooler and last for longer). They are $10aud and you'll need a set of screws and a t27 driver.
